Tonkin Adventure

8 Hours - coffee tasting, food tasting and ceramics making workshop

The name "Tonkin" was used in 1883 by the French to refer to the Red River Delta, including the capital city of Hanoi.

This experience is for those who are in a time crunch but still want see and taste most of Hanoi. Explore the sites of popular locations in Hanoi and taste some popular dishes.

On top of it, hop on the back of a motorbike to head outside of the city in the afternoon to explore Hanoi's surrounding craft villages with a workshop for you to find your hidden talents with us.

This tour offers a combination of a few "must-do" things  in Hanoi, as well as some hidden destinations and activities you'll only get when you tour with a local.

We'll pick you up at your hotel. From there, we will start our motorbike trip to the heart of the City—Hoan Kiem Lake—where we'll stop at a local coffee shop for a quick Vietnamese coffee and briefing. After that, we will move around the lake, stopping by some favorite spots along the way to learn about the history and legends of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi Prison and The Temple of Literature.

Continue motorbiking in the maze of the old quarter to Dong Xuan Market, our guide will provide you with some background information about the market, the lifestyle, and the roles that markets in Vietnam play. You can also buy some souvenirs here.

After walking around the city, passing through noisy and busy markets, you will appreciate a meal with a large spread of local dishes. After lunch, a coffee will be in order before heading outside of the city on the back of our motorbikes.

We will head toward Long Bien Bridge, the oldest historical landmark of the French left after colonization. Here we also have some background info about Hanoi, Hanoians, immigrants and some of the interesting facts about the Hanoian lifestyle.

Arriving in Bat Trang, we will visit our traditional pottery workshop. You will learn about how your teapots are made, what the process is, and different pottery-making techniques.

Time to get your hands dirty! Our workshop is ready for you to make your own products. You will be instructed by a local ceramics master on making some simple ceramic items (eg. cups, bowls, mugs). We’ve had many people successfully make some beautiful products in our workshop.

We’ll pass by the local market where people showcase their products for you to do some ceramics shopping on our way back to Hanoi.

Arrive back at your hotel.

Traveling by private car is an option, but we recommend taking the motorcycle. We think it is the best way to be a part of Hanoi.

If you want to ride your own bike, a motorbike license must be presented. Click here if you don't have a license.

The products you make in the workshop take about 3 days to fire before they become finished and useable. We will try to send your creations to wherever you are, but the fee of the tour does not cover shipping your pottery products overseas.

For those with back problems or family with elderly or young children, we recommend you write us to better prepare. We’ve had a courageous 7-year old having a blast, loving every bit of the adventure.

Please note that we do our best to see all sites listed, but the itinerary is subject to change at the guide's discretion due to the pace of the group, weather, or transit issues. If you have further questions, please see our F.A.Q.s or give us a call.
